Most commonly known in Canada as the Norway Rat, it is a brown or grey with a body up to 25 cm (10 in) long and a tail of similar length. The male can weigh on average 350 g (12 oz) and the female can weigh 250 g (9 oz).
The Norway rat is nocturnal and is a good swimmer, these rats are capable of producing ultrasonic vocalizations. The Norway rat can breed during the year if conditions are livable, with a female producing up to five times a year, each time bringing in up to 14 pups.
